Although it is a common believe, research show the opposite.
For example, a study showed that the cases of melanoma are increasing enormously amongst people who work indoors – and who have 3 to 9 times less exposure to the sun, than those who work outdoors.
On the other hand, countries with the most sun exposure have lower rates of skin cancer.
Why? Data indicates that what increases the risk of skin cancer is sunburning or being exposed to the sun intermittently. People who are exposed to the sun every day without burning (instead of tanning and getting sunburned once a year) receive all the benefits of the sun without increasing the risk of cancer.
Vitamin D and the benefits of the sun
One of the biggest benefits of the sun is vitamin D, which your body produces when the skin is in contact with daylight, specifically with ultraviolet B rays.
That vitamin D is a natural defence against cancer and helps counteracting the damage on the skin that ultraviolet A rays could cause is you are exposed to the sun excessively (until getting sunburned)
A study found that vitamin D could prevent 30 deaths for every death caused by skin cancer. And another study showed that for every death by skin cancer in Europe, between 60 and 100 people die of a heart attack or hypertension, conditions related to the lack of vitamin D and a lack of exposure to the sun.
Vitamin D is essential for the repair functions of your body. Almost all types of human cells have D vitamin receptors. Besides, it influences genetic expression and regulates defences.
Other benefits of being exposed to the sun:
It improves your mood
It regulates arterial pressure
It synchronizes the biological rhythms of your body
It improves many skin conditions
It prevents tuberculosis, cancer, hypertension, Alzheimer’s, dementia, myopia, diabetes and multiple sclerosis.
Is it recommendable to use sunscreen?
There is little evidence that sunscreen can help prevent the risk of skin cancer. A study showed that those who use sunscreen are more likely to develop melanoma or carcinoma.
Many ingredients in sunscreen are related to an increase in the risk of skin cancer. Several of the most common ingredients are hormonal disruptors, such as parabens. Oxybenzone, which is on 70% of commercial sunscreens, has been linked to the reduction of sperm in men and endometriosis in women.
Always avoid burning. If your skin starts tanning, it’s time to cover up.
In order to protect yourself from the sun, you can cover up with long sleeves, a hat or an umbrella.
Prefer natural sunscreens, based on zinc oxide or titanium oxide
If you’re going to use commercial sunscreen, check that it doesn’t have oxybenzone, Vitamin A (retinyl palmitate) and other substances (you can consult a list here). Avoid sprays, powders or an SPF over 50.
Sunbathe every day, briefly. This increases your vitamin D production. Try exposing other parts of the body, not just the face or arms.
The paler the skin tone, the more vulnerable you are to sunburning and the less exposure you need to the sun. You can increase your tolerance slowly, always without burning, to make sure to produce enough vitamin D.
To protect yourself more, eat foods rich in antioxidants and healthy fats.
You can measure your vitamin D with an analysis. It is advisable to have between 40 and 60ng/ml.
How often is it ideal to go to the bathroom to evacuate?
This is one of the questions I receive most frequently. When I was in Medical School, it was said that normal is what is usual for you: if you generally go once a week, then that’s normal for you. If you usually go three times a day, it’s normal for you. Is this correct?
We can assume a more analytical approach, why do we go to the bathroom? Why does our body have the need to eliminate? Evacuating is the main strategy that our body uses to cleanse itself. How often does it have to be cleaned? Every time it has waste, which are generated with all the processes of our organism, including walking and breathing, but especially when eating.
That’s why old medicines indicate that the ideal thing is to go to the bathroom the number of times you eat a day. If you do two or three strong meals a day, ideally you will evacuate two or three times a day.
Why is it important to make sure that we evacuate regularly?
When you don’t evacuate regularly, you’re reabsorbing the toxins and the debris that your body needed to eliminate.
This toxicity in the body can cause:
Permeable intestine: the intestine is perforated and allows toxins and undigested food to pass into your blood, which can affect other organs.
Diverticulitis: bags are formed in the inner wall of the intestine, where food and waste accumulates, they can ferment and rot.
Growth of pathogenic bacteria, parasites and fungi.
Little energy due to low oxygenation in the body.
Chronic inflammation, which usually aggravates existing diseases or damages organs.
Is it convenient to use laxatives?
It’s estimated that between 20% and 30% of the population suffers from constipation. The most common solution is to self-medicate laxatives, known as the second best-selling drug after aspirin.
But this is counterproductive, because they damage the digestive system and, even though they give momentary results, they actually worsen the problem.
What are the causes of constipation?
The reasons can be simple, such as having bad posture, lack of movement, poor diet, not drinking enough water or accustoming the body to contain the need to evacuate. It can occur during menstruation and pregnancy.
It can also be due to chronic stress, some emotional up and down, or a hormonal imbalance, since we know that the digestive system is the emotional home of our body: it’s where 80% of the neurotransmitters and the greatest amount of hormone receptors are located.
Other causes can be chronic digestive infections, growth of bacteria in the medium intestine, lack of enzyme production, abuse of antibiotics, the use of certain drugs and some diseases.
What can we do to relieve constipation?
The number one strategy is always to take care of the cause.
Now, if you want to relieve symptoms at home, you can use these practical strategies:
Make sure you stay very well hydrated. If there’s no water in a hose, it’s very difficult for the sand to come out, and the digestive system works is very similar. Take a liter of water on an empty stomach (preferably warm or hot) and walk during the day.
Enrich that liter of water with a teaspoon of baking soda and half a lemon. It works because bicarbonate stimulates peristalsis by an osmotic pressure that forms in the intestine, and the lemon stimulates digestion because it increases the production of enzymes.
Do some specific yoga postures to stimulate peristalsis.
Move in a way that stimulates the mechanical receptors of your digestive system: walking, jumping, using a trampoline, or a vibrating platform. If you complement it with the liter of water on an empty stomach, it’ll work incredibly.
Take supplements to reeducate your digestive system.
Some habits that might help you:
Eat fermented and probiotic foods, in addition to prebiotics, fiber and healthy fats.
Avoid using antibiotics whenever possible, as they kill both beneficial and harmful organisms.
Reduce stress. When stress is high, our body perceives that there is danger and blocks unnecessary systems, such as the digestive and the reproductive ones, and directs the blood to our extremities so that we can fight the aggression or flee. You can integrate breathing exercises into your daily routine to reduce stress.
Maintain a set schedule to go to the bathroom every day.
Use a platform that allows you to squat at the moment of evacuation.
Watch yourself and be sure to adopt strategies to help reeducate your digestive system and eliminate waste that your body no longer needs. It’s key in order to have an optimal body.

How to give yourself that digestive rest without starving or having to use all your willpower?
An easy way to practice intermittent fasting is during the night. Our body is designed to fast during the hours of darkness.
The ideal is to spend at least 12 hours without eating, from dinner to breakfast the next day. For example, if you dine at 7 o’clock in the evening, have breakfast after 7 o’clock in the morning. It is key to have a light dinner and to let three hours pass before going to sleep.
if it’s very complicated for you, you can start with 8 or 10 hours and extend them slowly. If you drink two glasses of warm water when you wake up (you can add drops of lemon or some herbal tea), it will help you reduce your apetite.
During the hours of fasting, don’t eat any food. You can drink water or herbal tea, but don’t add milk or sugar.
When you manage to fast for 12 hours daily, try to reach 14 or even 16 hours in order to allow your body to perform the tasks of cleansing and regeneration. Has it ever happened to you that you get on a diet and they tell you that you can’t eat some food and then that is exactly what you crave?
Why does this happen? What if it’s because of your cellular metabolism?
Cellular metabolism is the functioning of cells. If a vehicle works very well, it means its metabolism is good. The same thing happens with the body: if I have good energy or if I have a healthy weight, they are the result of my metabolism. If I have problems with migraines or allergies it means I don’t have a good metabolism. It’s all related to the way my cells are operating.
What if the reason why you gain weight is not that you are overeating, but the way your cells are working?

We are living an impressive epidemic of Alzheimer, dementia and senility. It is prognosticated that 50% of people will develop cancer and that 60% or 70% of people who live over 80 will have Alzheimer, dementia or senility. These conditions are the effects of a bad cellular metabolism.
What if weight is not the problem?
They’ve taught us to pay attention to the results and not the causes. We pay attention to the overweight, the migraines, cholesterol, high blood pressure, low defenses. What is one of these is not the problem but just the thing showing us that there is a problem? That’s why I decided to return to the scientific perspective that, unlike allopathic medicine, does aim at attending the causes of these conditions and not just focusing in the results.
What if your body is gaining weight to protect you?
Our body is perfect. It helped us get where we are after thousands of year of evolution in nature. Everything it does is to help us survive, to keep the species alive.
In what way could gaining weight help me survive?
It is said that 50% of cases of obesity and overweight or resistance to insulin are to protect you against the toxicity of the body. When the levels of toxicity in the body are too high, the body grows bigger to store those toxins in the fat and that way protect the lungs, the heart, the brain and the rest of the organs. How to break the cycle of dieting and restrictions?
Instead of following these extreme diets, my recommendation is to address the cause of the problem. You have to identify what’s driving you to gain weight, and many times this has to do with your lifestyle. You have to address it with strategies that don’t harm your cellular metabolism.
Everything that harms your cellular metabolism is going to harm you in the long term. You are the result of how your body operates, and the weight is only one of hundreds of results. There are others that have more impact in your life quality, as in the health of your brain. And what is the organ that pays the price for many of these diets that aim at losing weight no matter what? The brain.
If you want to obtain long term results and have an excellent quality of life, you can use science and the chemistry of nature. Getting a healthy weight is a good result for the body; it means that you have a healthy metabolism, good energy, good immunological system, good digestion, and good hormonal metabolism.
In order to get it, attack the problem at its root and choose a strategy that supports your body at a cellular, microbiotic and neurohormonal level.

Key strategies to support the liver
The liver is regenerating every day. With every bite you take you can give it the raw material it needs to function in an optimal way.
These are some strategies to decrease the load that your liver gets during the holidays:
Don’t saturate it: cut down on the meds that are unnecessary and moderate alcohol. Drink two glasses of water for every drink and try not to mix alcohol with sugar (in cocktails or desserts). Did you know that the liver takes one hour to digest one glass? That’s why the next day comes the hangover.
Avoid eating processed foods, sweeteners or energizing drinks. Choose fresh and natural foods, and avoid making diets high in protein.
Lower your exposition to toxins. The creams that you put on your body, cosmetics and cleaning products have harmful chemicals that your liver has to debug in order to stop them from being stored in the body. Try to substitute them with natural substances, such as coconut oil for the skin.
Reduce the sugar. The liver can metabolize around 6 little spoonfuls of sugar every day. A regular American consumes around 22 spoonfuls daily (hidden in sodas, juice and processed food).
Avoiding taking synthetic hormones, hormonal contraceptives and synthetic vitamins reduces the load for your liver.
Drink lots of water! When you want to improve a system you need to add more water and minerals.
Keep moving.A sedentary life is one of the biggest enemies of the liver. Try to walk at least 15 minutes after you eat and remain active during the day.

Can you imagine what our nomad ancestors did when they got a fever? Do you think they took something to lower it?
Of course not. And that was how we survived. Interesting, huh?
A fever is an inflammation mechanism that protects the body when there is an infection. It gets it by creating an inhospitable environment for the invasive organisms: in essence, it raises the temperature so they can’t survive. All bodies can do it and have done it for billions of years. Only in the last 80 years did we start taking medicines to stop a fever.
Is it dangerous to have a fever?
Why are so scared of a fever? It’s a situation to which we overreact, but it shouldn’t be a cause for alarm.
The percentage of cases that present bad complications (such as convulsions) is minimal. Those are the cases the pharmaceutical business has used to spread panic around fevers.
If our first reaction is trying to lower the fever, what happens with the micro-organisms from which our body is trying to protect us? Not only do we stop it from battling them, but we strength them. What to do when we have a fever?
Not long ago my son got a fever, what did I do? Strengthen him. He is the one who is important, not the fever or the virus. Let’s not lose the focus. In order to strengthen him, we listen to his body. He wasn’t hungry, so he didn’t eat for two days, but was drinking a lot of water. Why would we make him digest if what his body wants is to fight? In addition, his body asked for rest, so he stayed in bed most of the time. We went out in the sun for a moment to receive the signs of nature that made us strong. If your options are taking an anti-inflammatory or resting, choose the option that strengthens your body, not the one that weakens it. Why would you kill the impulse to protect yourself from your attacker and tie your hands? Better listen to the wisdom of your body, let it fight its battles and become stronger in the process.

Inflammation is a mechanism that the body developed to protect us. Imagine that you hit or cut yourself: if there’s no inflammation, you won’t heal. Inflammation is the best thing that can happen to us when it activates to protect us, occasionally.
However, in our time, we live in constant inflammation. We’re living a very inflammatory lifestyle. In this video, I talk a bit about it:
Why support —and not stop— the inflammatory processes?
Imagine the inflammation protection mechanism as an engine: if it’s on all the time, what will happen to it? It’s very likely that it’ll wear out, overheat or break down.
If we have constant inflammation, something similar happens. That is why we need to support our bodies’ inflammation processes to be more effective.
Inflammation is like an army. If you hit yourself, your skin turns red and swells. That’s your army in action, protecting you. But when we see it, what’s the first thing we think we should do? Often, take an anti-inflammatory.
That drug blocks the wonderful mechanism that nature gave us. That’s why we don’t want to run over the inflammatory process, but to support it. Our body knows how to do regeneration tasks better than anything else. Thanks to that, we’ve survived millions of years.
Imagine that a red bulb lights up in your car. You can cover it up, or you can check what’s happening: check the engine, put gasoline. If you cover it, I assure you that something bad will happen. We do this with our body when we take anti-inflammatories, cover the warning signals that our body gives us. That’s why it’s important to listen to the “itis” and support your organism. All the data will help you. That information serves to improve how your body is working.
How do we support the inflammation processes?

Why kill the wisdom of the body with an anti-inflammatory? We better support it. Let us take advantage of that wonderful intelligence that we have acquired over millions of years. The body knows better than all of us together. Let’s support it and let it do its magic.

Nature is our main source of health.
Unfortunately, due to the ethics of agricultural industry practices, our soils are lacking in nutrients and compounds that should belong to it. We’ve stolen them to optimize productivity. We’re starting to see deficiencies in our body that we’d never seen before and starting to find toxicity that enters our body through the food we consume.
Because of the way we have handled the planet Earth and our body, we’ve gotten ourselves into certain predicaments in which we do need more intense support, so to speak. For me, that support is supplements.
It’s for this reason that I, personally, do use supplements and consider that today they are necessary. I tell you more about it in this video:
You have to remember that they will never replace food. We must use them strategically to support the body and the needs that each one of us has. They’re a tool of great power and should be treated with respect for the great potential they have.
The essential thing is to listen to your body and know it in detail. If you can measure yourself —doing analysis and registering your parameters— it’d be much better. I’m a fan of measuring and obtaining objective data: where is my body, what processes are failing, what can I support. I perform studies twice a year, I measure and, according to that, I create my feeding and supplements protocol. This is how I design strategies, whether is for me, my children or my patients.
What I do not recommend is to start taking supplements blindly just because someone told me they were good for me. We have to make sure that the body does need them, that they do it well and that they support a function from which we’re going to benefit.
For example, if I feel that one of my children is going to get a cold, I support their defenses with food and supplements that are also aimed at strengthening their defenses. I listen to their body and I give them what they need at that moment. I don’t give them something every day to support their defenses.
