How often do you have a bowel movement?

Let´s talk about a topic we´re probably not used to discussing openly and maybe one of the tools that can give us the more information about our body. Our stool, yes poop!

Lets see how much you know about you and what can you learn from this.

How often do you go to the bathroom? Once a day, three times  a week… What is normal? or actually, what is optimal?

What color is your stool? Black, green, redish? Is it normal?

What shape is it? Is it liquid? Worm-like strips? A long worm? Small balls?  What is normal? What is optimal?

With questions like this we can get to know this product of our body and what information it gives us.

For today, we´ll focus in the frequency. How often do you have a bowel movement?

When I was in medical school normal was whatever was constant for a person, lets say if somebody goes once a week and maintains this frequency then it´s normal; same as once a day or three times a day.  Actually this never made much sense to me, having stool stored in ur intestines for more time than necessary can´t bring good consequences.

Now, if we look at ancient medicines, all considered ideal evacuating more than once per day, especially if we eat more than once a day.  Now, this makes more sense.

If we analyze the purpose of evacuation, we can see it´s the final process of digestion, on which we depend to expel everything that was leftover, what we don´t need in the body.  And, how often do we have something we don´t need?  Well,  every time we eat our body produces waste products.

Now, lets look at nature.  I believe it can help us identify optimal for us, after all, nature has helped us evolve.  A human being in its original form, a baby, usually has a bowel movement after every meal.

Unfortunately most of us are far from this.  A good percent of the population, especially women, suffer from constipation and laxatives are of common use.  I have seed people take anywhere from one and up to fifteen daily laxatives during years, creating a physiological dependency that deteriorates even more our intestinal functioning.

Once you do the work for your body (with the laxatives) it gets used to it, generating a vicious cycle in which most likely you will need a higher dose of laxatives for them to work. In the long rum they always stop working and don´t promote proper functioning of the body.

Now, how can you achieve better bowel functioning?

You have to start according to where you are at and set gradual goals:

  • Having a bowel movement at least once a day, or ideally more.

Educate your body (retraining):

  • Always go to the bathroom when you feel the urge to do so
  • Go to the bathroom every morning, even if you don’t feel like it, sit down for two to five minutes to start creating the habit.

Mechanical support (literally use the laws of physics to your advantage):

  • Chew, chew, and chew every bite
  • Move after eating, go for a ten to fifteen minute walk.
  • Drink one liter of water before breakfast, only this tip has helped many people!
  • Drink a cup of hot water after meals, you can add some lemon drops.

Chemical support
