As a mother, what wouldn’t you do to avoid that your children die before you? According to statistics, today’s children run the risk of living less than their parents.
“It’s expected that today’s children will be the first generation whose life expectancy will be less than that of their parents”
Therefore the question is: What is in our hands to change this?
Thanks to investigation and availability to access information, we recognize the increasing power we have everyday. Let me start by prenatal nutrition and health.
Having studied traditional medicine, my children attended the pediatrician regularly. As a routine, they were prescribed in more than one occasion different medication forms.
If their ear hurt, an antibiotic. If they had a skin rash, a cortisone cream. For nutrition, preserves and prepackaged cereals.
With responsibility, I refused to use medications in my children and I took the risk of supporting their physiology instead of damaging it. With this I mean instead of using antibiotics to stop an ear infection, that today is proved to respond in the same way to a natural support than an antibiotic in most of the cases, I decided to strengthen their defenses with herbs, real home-made food and probiotic blend.
I also decided to treat the skin problem from the root and strengthen their digestion instead of covering up the reaction with cortisone. And instead of using processed industry food I decided to make their meals myself in my house kitchen.
It’s been 8 amazing years of learnings with my children, in which we’ve implemented together and put to test much of what I’ve learned from ancient medicines and functional medicine. Nevertheless, as a professional, I’ve always used laboratory measurements and their growth, which confirmed their wellbeing.
From them I’ve learned that sweet is a fascinating factor, that it’s everywhere and also that education regarding sweet requires time, patience and experimentation so the child can identify food-reaction by himself opposed to being imposed to him.
The first years of life are the most important for the formation and care of a human being because childhood is a stage of much more vulnerability, especially if we focus in the physical and mental development.
And even though in some occasions it might seem logical, let me state this: The effect of 1 gram of any substance in the body of a child is not directly proportional to the effect that the same quantity has of this substance in an adult body. Especially when we’re talking about a chemical, call it preservative, additive, flavor enhancer, etc…or a medication. Both with harmful secondary effects for health.
Now I leave you some advice that will help you teach your children how to use food as an instrument of life.
When our kids are very young the difficulties we have as mothers at the time of feeding them are relatively simple. Nevertheless, when they start to grow and eat in many other places and contexts things may get a little more difficult.
This is why I propose and recommend you to allow your kids to relate with food from a very early age. Let them interact with food, play; even if in occasions this means they get dirty and you have to clean. This will allow children to have an excellent relationship with food from the beginning.
While they’re growing the process changes a little, now that we should start to create consciousness of what food can do for them and their bodies. An excellent way to achieve it, more than obvious results that are perceived in a healthy, well nourished child like good defenses, a good mental development, excellent energy, etc is to involve them in all of the nourishing process:
- Let them experiment/play with food, according to their age
- Involve them in kitchen decisions: what will they eat, preparation, benefits, ingredients and why these ingredients.
- Invite them to the supermarket, to collaborate with menus.
- Approximate food to them as an opportunity to become stronger, faster, more intelligent; whatever they want to become.
These aspects may seem obvious, insignificant but these are the details that give them voice and participation in the process. Necessary elements to create their own impressions regarding the importance of nutrition throughout life. Always considering the impact that nutrition has on their health.
Until here for today. And remember: children are as sponges, they learn and absorb knowledge of all they see, listen and feel. So it’s up to you that your kids grow up using food as a tool for their benefit or as a weapon against them. Be patient, teach with example, take care of your body and always go with nature.
