Sugar: Source of life or disease?

For many years medicine has blamed fat consumption as the responsible for most of chronic, neuronal and cardiovascular diseases that affect the population. It’s such a fact that advertising campaigns were created promoting low fat diets, and we were guided to believe that the less fats we consumed the better health we´d have.

According to Dr. Lusting, professor at the Endocrinology Division in Pediatrics Clinic of San Francisco University in California, in his book

Fat Chance: Beating the Odds Against Sugar, Processed Food, Obesity, and Disease, he assures that excessive sugar and canned products – not fat consumption- what causes the great majority of chronic metabolic illnesses that affect us today, including:

  • Diabetes
  • Cardiovascular Diseases
  • Hipertension
  • Alzheimer and Dementia
  • Cáncer
  • And others

 

The main problem with sugar is that the liver has a very limited capacity to metabolize it.

According to an article published by Dr. Mercola the liver can metabolize with no problem around 6 teaspoons of sugar per day, which might seem very little if we consider that an average american consumes an average of 22 teaspoons daily.

1 sugar teaspoon = 4 grams

Did you know that even if you don’t add sugar to your food it’s very probable that you’re a sugar consumer?

Leaving aside the addiction that sugars create, the tendency to consume low fat products raised the sugar content in many processed products- even the ones considered or advertised as “healthy”- to make up for the fat that was removed from these products. This because a fat free or sugar free product would be tasteless and impossible to sell. A common example is yogurt that is sold in most supermarkets.

Dr. Lusting mentions another alarming industrial food problem. He says regardless of having a label where you can check ingredients of what you´re about to consume, it´s hard being able to recognize from the product´s natural sugar and added artificial sugar.

Quantity of Sugar: 7 grams 7gr lactose + 12gr added
Harm: Minimal Important

Cancer rates will rise more than 50% in the next two decades

Nevertheless, the study also revealed  that more than half of those cancers can be prevented if we improve and change drastically our eating habits.

Do you feel your body craves for sugar? Not always what your body asks for is what  is good for you. Think of the cocaine addict; his body asks for the substance, nevertheless consuming it will only do more harm.

There’s several studies from some years ago that prove that sugar not only feeds cancer, but also starts it´s growth. That´s why if we want to decrease the risk of getting cancer or practically any disease, our priority should focus in diminishing our daily sugar intake.  

Recommendations to help you with this temptation/ addiction

The easiest way to reduce sugar consumption is to change our diet for one composed of unprocessed whole foods (real food, in their natural state, original form how they come from nature.

There’s also other ways to do it:

  • Reduce the sugar you add to drinks such as tea or coffee
  • Avoid INDUSTRIAL canned products
  • Avoid sodas and artificial drinks
  • Avoid light, low fat or fat free products
